Term 2 CSDs

CSD 1

6/7 French 

Students will learn basic communication skills in French as a second language and learn about French culture. Through games, activities, oral communication, writing and reading, we will be learning new vocabulary and how to ask and answer questions in order to have a basic conversation.

6/7 Band

Students will demonstrate their learning through note-reading, musicianship, rehearsal techniques, and performance. Students will improve basic music skills through practice and performance of concert works and exercises focusing on playing techniques.

6/7 Art

Students will focus on mixing media and the techniques of drawing, painting and sculpture. Some of the subjects covered are line drawing, watercolour techniques, tempera painting, paper cutting and collage, oil and chalk pastel lessons. Students will discover career opportunities such as: graphic designer, animator, commercial artist or interior designer.

6/7 Dance & Stretching 

Students will learn a large variety of dance and yoga skills. Students will also  learn about the career opportunities surrounding these activities such as: dance/ yoga/ pilates teachers, choreographers, costume/ clothing designer, physical therapist, dance, and  medicine specialist. Students will also teach a younger group of students a routine of their creation, just like a teacher, coach or mentor.

6/7 Foods 

Students will be given the opportunity to gain intermediate food preparation and safety skills through hands on activities.  They will learn how to prepare various food items, about healthy eating choices, and safety in the kitchen. These skills would apply to numerous career choices such as: chef, sous chef, restaurateur, food studies teacher, or nutritionist.

6/7 Hand Sewing 

Students will develop sewing skills and techniques to construct a home or personal accessory. They will also learn how to safely use/care for sewing equipment and will identify the terminology used to make a project. Students will grow in independence and individuality in their stitching skills while also learning management skills and use of resources. A basic knowledge of sewing can be invaluable within the sewing, fashion, home décor, and textile industries.

6/7 Stop Motion Animation

Students will be learning about the different formats of stop motion animation.  They will develop their own stop motion videos through a process that will involve creating a script, storyboard and a finished product. 

6/7 & 8/9 Wellness Champions 

Students will explore what it means to live a healthy lifestyle and lead others on their health  journey. This class will lead mental, physical, and emotional health activities in our school to help build a healthy and active community. Students will also learn about healthy cooking practice, fitness opportunities and much more. Join us and commit to living your best life!

8/9 Coding 

Students will learn about coding strategies through the online program ‘Hour of Code’ and through the use of small Sphero robotic devices. Students will develop skills in the growing industry of coding which are necessary for careers in engineering, software development, cyber security, web development, and robotics. There is also an opportunity of having an automation engineer come in to talk with students.

8/9 Sports Medicine

Sports Medicine is designed for students interested in fields such as physical therapy, exercise science, athletic training, or any other related medical or paramedical field. Topics of study will include: nutrition, basic anatomy of bones and muscles, injury recognition, care and prevention. Students should expect the requirements of memorization, research and presentation, and hands on activities.

8/9 Scrapbooking 

Scrapbooking is a fun, creative outlet where students will explore scrapbooking techniques to tell their personal story through photos, journaling, and other memorabilia.  The students will complete mini projects as well as a scrapbook that reflects a journey or a life experience. Students will need to provide a scrapbook, photos, stickers and some paper.  Some possible careers related to scrapbooking/cardmaking could include: being an entrepreneur in leading workshops and special events at various stores and or retreats. Other possibilities include creating themed gift albums for weddings, birthdays, and other special occasions. 

8/9 Japanese Anime Art  

Students will explore Manga and Anime and learn more about Japanese culture.  Students will analyze popular animations and graphic novels as well as experience a range of different drawing techniques. If time permits, students can explore areas of Japanese cuisine, language and Cosplay design creations. Possible occupation connections are author, fashion studies design, exhibit designer, illustrator or cartoonist.

8/9 Film Studies

Film Studies will look at exploring the world of film starting with camera angles, lighting, and music/sound effects. Students will learn about various types of films and the history of film. They will also explore the role critics play in making movies successful and will take on the role of critic. In addition, we will explore various career choices that are available in the cinematic industry.

8/9 Game of Life 

This class takes the board game of Life and turns it into a real life scenario. Students will be using the concepts throughout the board game and applying them to real life situations. Students will be given situations similar to the ones in the board game and have to plan, budget and assess how they could handle them in real life. Each class will be a new adventure in the game of life.

CSD 2

6/7 Scrapbooking

6/7 Graphic Media Design

Students will learn about elements of graphic design, robotics, and coding. Through using robots to design an image, students will develop problem solving skills and the ability to make computer programs. This option will also put students in charge of looking after the different forms of technology in the school. This option connects to carers in IT, programming, and graphic design.

6/7 Food Truck Face Off 

Food trucks have become more popular and common within the past few years. They serve delicious food and beverages from many culinary backgrounds! Students will take a behind the scenes learning adventure on the branding, marketing, and design of food trucks and then design their very own food trucks!  Students would either bring or make sample sized foods to go with their truck’s design.

6/7 Environmental Studies 

This class will look at what it means to live a sustainable lifestyle with a low ecological footprint. Students will engage in several hands on activities to reduce, reuse, recycle and rethink waste, as well as find ways in which they can make a difference in our city, province and our country. We will do activities such as: repurposing waste into usable items, plant and grow seeds, research different ways to lower our school’s ecological footprint, debate and discuss important issues, look at important trends like ‘zero waste’ and implement some changes into their personal lifestyle. This CSD encourages students to be responsible and active citizens and to guard God’s creation. 

6/7 Drawing

Students will learn drawing techniques that will develop into their own still life drawing. A still life drawing is a collection of objects arranged in a specific way. The magic of a still life drawing is that they can show us a new way of looking at the ordinary items around us. They will develop skills that will help them understand the value scale, line, shape, and texture. Students will also write their own artist statement to express and communicate their work.

6/7 Mindful Stretching 

Students focus on interpersonal connections while working towards creating self-goals. Fitness, focus, and goal setting are skills learned through this course. Students will work together to research, collaborate and put a routine together. Occupational areas include  fitness trainer and yoga instructor.

6/7 Rec-Ed

The main goal for Recreation Education is for students to become aware and gain experience in various activities. The students will participate in different sports and learn the rules, skills and teamwork in order to play the games. There will also be an opportunity where the students will be required to teach their peers a game just like a recreational program leader, coach or teacher.

8/9 Trash to Treasure - Jewelry Design 

Students will design and create one of a kind jewelry.  Using broken, discarded or unloved trinkets, students will develop a design plan and bring their recycled ideas to life.  Students explore their interests, passions and skills while making personal connections to career possibilities found within global/local communities. Management and marketing, fashion studies, design studies and environmental stewardship are just a few of the career connections.

8/9 Book Club 

Students will be reading great books in community.   The will read, discuss, and recommend books they choose. Students will have access to a curated classroom library so they can explore titles they may not have considered before and write book reviews to share with the rest of the school. No matter how serious or silly our book discussions are, just getting together and chatting about books on a regular basis can be fun! Careers connected to reading, analyzing, and discussing books include: writer, editor, librarian, and teacher.

8/9 Media Studies

In media studies, students will look critically at a variety of forms of media, including literature, comics, television shows, movie shorts and cinema.  For each viewing, students will be responsible for completing an assignment that assesses that particular media.
